ABOUT ALICE SPRINGS

Alice Springs has a population of over 28,000 people and is known throughout the Northern Territory as ‘The Red Centre’.

The township was originally called Stuart after early explorer, John McDouall Stuart. It wasn’t until 1933 that the name was changed from Stuart to Alice Springs.

The traditional Aboriginal owners of Alice Springs are the Arrernte people, but because of its central location, you will find many different Aboriginal people from other regions are attracted to come to Alice Springs. To the Arrernte people, Alice Springs is known as Mparntwe.
