ABOUT DARWIN
Darwin, population 69,455,
was founded in 1869 and is known throughout the Northern Territory as “The Top End”.
The first attack on
Australian soil was in Darwin
during WWII and was subject to over 60 Japanese air-raid attacks during Feb
1942 and Oct 1943.
Darwin, however, is most known for the devastation
caused by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Day, 1974. More than 30,000 people were
evacuated after 64 people were killed and thousands injured.
The traditional
Aboriginal owners of Darwin
are known as the Larrakai people and are
prominent figures within the community.
